Promises to Keep: A Motivation Monday Reflection

Promises to keep can sound like one more thing on a long Monday list. But I hear something reassuring in those words: someone is counting on us, and we have an opportunity to come through.

“But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep.”

Robert Frost

These lines come from Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” They have stayed with me because the idea is so familiar. There is always something else competing for our attention, even when we know what we said we would do.

The relief of knowing someone will follow through

Think about the last time someone told you, “I’ll take care of it,” and you knew you could believe them. You probably stopped thinking about that particular problem. You didn’t need to send a reminder or quietly start working on a backup plan.

That kind of confidence is earned over time. A returned call is a small thing until you are the person waiting for it. Then it can change the rest of your afternoon.

After more than 20 years in real estate, I have come to appreciate how much trust depends on what happens after a conversation ends. If I tell a client I will find an answer, I need to follow through. If the answer takes longer than expected, an update still matters. People can usually work with a delay more easily than silence.

Making room for the promises already made

A full calendar can make a new commitment feel easy to accept and surprisingly difficult to keep. Saying yes takes a moment. Doing what we agreed to do takes actual time.

That is the part I want to pay attention to this week. Before adding another obligation, I want to make sure I have left room for the people and projects I have already committed to.

This applies at home as much as at work. If someone has been looking forward to spending time with us, that deserves a place on the calendar too. Being dependable should include the people who know us best.

For anyone curious about how that approach carries into my work with buyers and sellers, I’ve shared more about my real estate background and approach.

As another fall Monday begins here in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene, Frost’s words offer a useful question: Is there a promise I could give some attention to today?

I hope your week gets off to a good start, with enough room for what you have already decided matters.
